LORD SELKIRK PARK CHILD CARE CENTRE
Ages 3 months-12 yrs
In partnership with Manitoba Housing Authority, Manidoo Gi Miini Gonaan opened in the heart of the Lord Selkirk Park Housing Development in January 2012. Lord Selkirk Park Child Care Centre is located at 102-269 Dufferin Avenue in the apartment building known locally as “The Towers”. Access to the Centre is on the north west side of the building off of the parking lot. We are licensed for 15 school age spaces, 9 infant and 23 pre-school spaces. The Centre also includes the existing resource Centre. This Centre piloted the Abecedarian Project, the first of its kind in Canada. More about the Abecedarian Approach is attached at the end of this document.
CURRICULUM
The Abecedarian Approach is implemented by educators at this site.
With the Infants and Preschool children, we implement four Abecedarian elements: Learning Games, Enriched Caregiving and Conversational Reading with the focus on Language Priority. Educators will offer planned and spontaneous activities based on each child’s level of development and their interest throughout the day.
With the School Age children, we implement the Abecedarian After Care by stretching the Learning Games that they have previously learned—with focus on enhancing social skills, independence, and advanced literacy development.
INFANT ROOM SCHEDULE
All our locations will follow the infants and toddlers’ individual schedules for feeding, diapering and napping. Breast feeding mothers will be encouraged to come and feed their infants at the appropriate times. Naptime is based on the child’s individual schedule.
The daily schedule is a guideline for staff and the children to help with daily routines and transitions throughout the day. We are flexible in changing or adjusting the daily schedule to meet the needs of each child individually.
Abecedarian Approach curriculum will be a part of the child’s individual schedule each day.
